Shared Ground is a youth‑led organization dedicated to bridging understanding by elevating the voices and experiences of those who are often unheard.
What Drives Our Mission
At the Shared Ground Project, our work is driven by a simple belief: young people have the power to shift conversations and spark real change. Youth bring honesty, creativity, and a clear sense of what matters, and when we share our stories, we add perspectives that are too often missing. Our mission is rooted in unity, equity, and understanding, connecting across borders, valuing every voice, and taking the time to listen. Through international youth‑led journalism, we aim to raise awareness, encourage dialogue, and show that the next generation isn’t waiting on the sidelines. We’re contributing to solutions right now.
Who We Are at Shared Ground
The Shared Ground Project is a team of young writers, researchers, and fellows working to build understanding across borders. We focus on youth‑led storytelling because we believe that honest perspectives can cut through assumptions and help people see one another more clearly. Our work centers on creating spaces where young people can share their experiences, learn from each other, and strengthen global empathy through thoughtful, responsible journalism.
What Sets Us Apart
Built on Empathy and Responsible Storytelling
Empathy guides the way we approach every story. We do not try to speak for people or rush to explain their experiences. Instead, we listen, ask thoughtful questions, and give young people the space to share their perspectives in their own words. Our team focuses on telling stories with care and honesty, checking our assumptions and paying attention to context. This approach helps us build real understanding across borders and keeps our work grounded in the voices and experiences of the youth we learn from.
Youth‑Led and Youth‑Driven
Shared Ground is built and run by young people at every level. Our projects are led by youth researchers, writers, and fellows, and our board is made up mostly of young leaders who guide our direction and hold us accountable to our values. Much of our international work has been carried out through solo travel, planned and executed independently, which has shaped our hands‑on, adaptable approach. Being youth‑led isn’t a label for us, it’s the reality of how we operate, make decisions, and stay connected to the communities we serve.
Independent and Self‑Funded Origins
Shared Ground began as a self‑funded effort, made possible because our founder worked a job to support the projects he believed in. That choice wasn’t about recognition it was about taking responsibility for work that mattered and proving that young people can build something real when the cause is worth it. That mindset shaped our culture: we stay accountable, we invest in our mission, and we follow through because we genuinely believe in the impact of youth‑led storytelling. As our fellows program grows, that same grounded, hands‑on commitment continues to guide how we operate.
